Synopsis:The video/performance piece Condition (2009) uses a language base to explore the theme of clichéd social constructs spilling out into a semi-public domain. Using the strategy that one protagonist must deliver a repetitive line, a compulsion and a condition for the protagonist, in the film script – “Why? Because I’m a girl?” – sets up a power imbalance and this insistence on this line creates a unique sequence whereby variable intonation arises from the sameness this woman speaks. The category ‘girl’ never wanes nor varies, her homogenous dialogue are a condition to the compulsory reproduction of the species as expressed through such a forced repetition. This constitutes our social reality under the same copula, where scripted quotidian sameness challenges the master/slave dyad of patriarchal systems. Metalanguage – a sociolinguistic attempt at disrupting the video’s diegesis. Within this linguistic dominion of speech, change does occur in the division of compulsory repetition; a range of meaning is expressed through intonation. The film’s aim hopes to question the exploitation of heterosexuality.

Documentary and the fictitious coalesce in the staging of The Butch Delivery (2009). A narrated account is given to us, at times destabilised from our notion of diachronic time to reconfigure film temporality. Via this disconnect of image/narration, film language itself is studied. Shots like point of view rethink our notion of subjectivity. Our idea of the main action occurring in the foreground is mismatched as the background becomes the forefront of interest on this Mount Eden street scene. The out of sync narrative at times probes the expectation that image/sound, especially in contemporary film, will be in time.
